Have you ever felt that when your instructor cues “and…. you have the option to bind!” that you really wanted, needed to bind? I have found myself trying harder for the bind, especially in the beginning, because it gave me a sense of “done! check! accomplished!”. Have you paid attention if towards the bind you are actually forcing another body part to achieve what you think it “looks” awesome? Or maybe you are a type A personality, that sees results in a certain way. In Yoga sometimes that can be called our Ego, our selfish reasons to get into, or our humble view on a pose (or anything really, even life) that we believe it’s the right way. A bind can be extremely rewarding, when you find the sense of balance between “sthira and sukha”, the sanskrit terms for steady, comfortable “STHIRA SUKHAM ASANAM” the sutra that describes the asana (pose) to be both steady and comfortable. Just a little thought…. for next time you wish to bind (one of my favorite things to do, really!) in a pose!
